In the early hours of September 19, 2024, Parks Canada received a report of vehicle collisions with five plains bison on the parkway in Elk Island National Park: 3 young females, 1 young male, and 1 middle-aged male. Three bison were struck and killed and two additional bison, which had sustained significant injuries, were euthanized by RCMP and Parks Canada. Local emergency services including EMS attended the scene, but the vehicle occupants did not sustain injuries. RCMP is investigating the motor vehicle collision.
Superintendent with Elk Island National Parks with Parks Canada told Windspeaker news, Parks Canada is taking the measures to honour the deaths of the bison.
Parks Canada takes the protection of wildlife very seriously and works hard to reduce human-caused wildlife mortality.
