The Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) is reminding drivers to reduce their speed in school zones. During the first two weeks of school, from September 3 to September 18, they issued a total of 249 speeding tickets in these areas—109 from photo radar and 140 from local officers. During the two weeks, GPPS reported a couple of cases of excessive speeding, including one motorist ticketed for going 63 km/h, more than double the limit.
“While it’s encouraging to see fewer automated traffic enforcement contraventions compared to this time last year, the number of speeding violations issued by Peace Officers remains concerning,” says Peace Officer Sergeant Ryan Hoffman.
“The fact that some of the speeding was excessive shows that some motorists are still taking unnecessary risks. School zones exist to protect children, and we need every driver to do their part by respecting the 30 km/h speed limit.”
Grande Prairie Enforcement Services urges drivers to be vigilant about reduced speed limits, busy crosswalks, and increased pedestrian activity around schools, playgrounds, and neighborhood streets during the school year. They are also asking drivers to always obey the 30 km/h speed limit in school and playground zones.
“We will continue our enforcement efforts, but safety ultimately depends on every driver choosing to slow down,” adds Hoffman
