RCMP in east-central Alberta are hunting for suspects behind a brazen overnight raid on an oilsands site that left behind roughly half a million dollars in destruction and netted the thieves about $100,000 in copper wiring.
According to Mounties, the intruders forced their way into the Lindbergh Pump Station in the County of St. Paul in the early hours of Thursday.
The facility, located next to an underground oilsands operation along Range Road 50 roughly 30 kilometers southeast of Bonnyville, sustained extensive structural harm during the theft.
Station personnel were first alerted around 2:30 a.m. by a power outage.
Upon checking the site, they found the power building heavily damaged and the copper wire missing.
Officials confirmed that no petroleum products escaped as a result of the break-in.
