The Bonnyville Friendship Centre hosted the Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association’s 56th Annual General Gathering this weekend, drawing leaders, Elders, staff and community members from across the province to the Lakeland.
Under the theme “Honouring our Path in Balance and Renewal,” participants reconnected, shared ideas, celebrated Indigenous culture through drumming and dancing, and recognized those who built the Friendship Centre movement.
Terry Lusty from the Canadian Native Friendship Centre in Edmonton received the 2026 ANFCA Legacy Award for more than 60 years of service.
The event also brought Indigenous, municipal and provincial leaders together in Bonnyville, including Grand Chief Joey Pete of the Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations, Bonnyville Mayor Elisa Brosseau and M.D. of Bonnyville Councilor Dan Amalia.
The event highlighted both the broader Friendship Centre movement and the local centre’s ongoing role supporting individuals and families in Bonnyville.
