Red Deer RCMP is reminding motorists to be alert as students return to class this week. Classes are in session across the board effective August 31, with some students at St. Patrick’s Community School already back.
Motorists are urged to:
-Plan Ahead: Leave earlier, especially if your route takes you through school zones.
– Avoid Distractions: Put down your phone and focus on the road. Be vigilant for children near crosswalks, intersections, and drop-off zones.
– Expect the Unexpected: Children, particularly young ones, can be unpredictable and may suddenly run into traffic.
– Always Stop for School Buses: If the bus has its red lights flashing, you must stop.
“The excitement of a new school year, along with early mornings and busy routines, can increase distractions behind the wheel. Now is not the time to be complacent. With increased traffic around schools, pedestrians, cyclists, and school buses share the road. Busy drop-off areas can become congested quickly, and drivers are reminded that a few extra seconds can help prevent a collision,” RCMP say in a release.
