A 16-year-old from Manning has been arrested after RCMP investigated a threat to shoot students on the first day of school.
Police in the northern Alberta town, located about 570 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, learned of the threat on Aug. 19.
According to RCMP, a student had threatened to shoot other students when classes resume on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
After gathering statements, investigators identified a suspect. RCMP executed a search warrant at a local residence on Tuesday and seized seven firearms.
“We immediately looped in our partners at the school, as well as the Peace River School Division, in order to assist us in the investigation as well as review security measures,” RCMP said in a statement.“We encourage members of the public to always report any threats to our children and allow us to fully investigate and prevent these disasters from happening.”
A 16-year-old from Manning was arrested and faces a charge of uttering threats, pending Crown approval.
“The safety and well-being of our students and staff will always remain an unwavering priority for the Peace River School Division,” said superintendent Jeff Thompson.
