Many homes in Springbrook sustained significant damage from hail on Aug. 23, 2026
A powerful thunderstorm dumped near golf ball-sized hail across parts of central Alberta on Sunday, with Springbrook among the hardest-hit communities.
According to Environment Canada, the storm produced damaging hail along a nearly 300-kilometre path from Springbrook to Wainwright.
The first severe storm struck the Red Deer area around 4 p.m., producing hailstones up to golf-ball size.
Around 6:30 p.m., similar golf ball-sized hail fell in the Ardley area, about 49 kilometres east of Red Deer. Northwest of Crossfield at roughly the same time, residents reported quarter-sized hail.
The largest stones were reported near Czar around 7:30 p.m., where hen egg-sized hail measuring about five centimetres in diameter was observed.
A funnel cloud was also reported in the Czar area around that time.
The full financial impact—including damage to homes, vehicles and crops—has yet to be determined.
