The wildfire danger has gone down to moderate across the Fort McMurray Forest Area, as there are no active wildfires in the region.
Alberta Wildfire says fires can still start and spread under cooler weather conditions, but are less likely to become severe if detected quickly.
Residents are still being asked to remain cautious when having outdoor fires and ensure they are fully extinguished. If you are using an off-highway vehicle, you’re asked to take precautions to prevent accidentally starting a fire. Mud, grass and other debris can accumulate around hot spots of an OHV and should be removed often. Riders are also encouraged to carry a fire extinguisher, pail and shovel.
Since January 1, there have been 45 wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest Area, but there are none currently active.
Residents still have until Saturday to enter Alberta’s Wildfire annual wildfire pledge contest. Those who take the pledge are commited to measures aimed at preventing human-caused wildfires and are entered in for a chance to win an educational helicopter flight over the Horse River wildfire area.
