On Saturday, August 1, the Saskatchewan Roughriders turned the tables on the Edmonton Elks, winning 28-26 and evening the season series between the two teams. Backup quarterback Tommy Stevens played a key role, scoring three touchdowns. With this victory, the Roughriders improved their record to 5-2, placing them in sole possession of second place in the CFL’s West Division.
The Elks, who have struggled to make the playoffs since 2019, fell to 6-2 and remain in first place.
“It was penalties that caught up to us in this one,” said Elks head coach Mark Kilam. “Full credit to them; they made more plays. It was a battle between two good football teams. We gave ourselves a chance, but we just weren’t clean enough at the end. I’d like to see our running game improve and score more touchdowns in the red zone; that was a significant part of this game.”
This matchup was a rematch from the previous week when Edmonton’s Vincent Blanchard kicked a career-best 57-yard field goal on the final play, leading the Elks to a thrilling 36-34 victory. The two teams are set to face off again in Regina on October 24, during the final week of the season.
