The City of Grande Prairie has provided an update on the petroleum hydrocarbon spill in Bear River on Friday, July 25.
According to the City, the spill has been fully contained in the section of the river between Maskwoteh Park and the Grande Prairie Museum.
Officials say there is currently no danger to the public. However, residents are advised to keep children and pets out of the water as a precaution.
The City did not release a specific cause for the spill. In a statement, it noted that stormwater flows untreated into local waterways, including the Bear River, and encouraged residents to help protect the environment by properly disposing of chemicals, fuels, oils, and other potentially harmful materials.
Clean-up efforts are expected to continue throughout this week. Temporary closures of the bridge near the Grande Prairie Museum are anticipated while crews move equipment in the area.
