RMWB Council has approved $10 million in capital funding to complete a significant amount of additional paving this year to address aging municipal roadways in the region.
“This additional $10 million in funding means we can get even more municipal road and street repair and paving work done at a time when we all know it is much needed,” said Mayor Sandy Bowman.
“We thank community members for sticking together in solidarity and municipal workers on the front lines for setting records this year in the number of repairs being finished. We know there is no point in waiting for next year to do more – it’s better to get it done now in support of residents and our staff.”
Project overview
The project will involve removing the top layer of worn asphalt and replacing it with new pavement to restore road quality and extend the life of the roadways. Many neighbourhoods will see some level of road repairs associated with this project. Construction notices with further details will be shared on the RMWB website before work begins. Franklin Avenue will not see any new paving until construction of Reach 6 flood mitigation on Clearwater Drive progresses further. Given the size and complexity of Confederation Way, repaving and rehabilitation work is being considered for upcoming construction seasons. General spot paving and pothole repairs already underway will continue to be completed throughout the construction season. This work is not part of the additional $10 million approved for paving.
Investing in roadways
Over time, roads naturally deteriorate due to regular traffic, weather exposure and seasonal freeze-thaw cycles. Due to the extreme weather conditions this past winter, in some areas, road conditions have reached a point where routine maintenance is no longer enough to prevent further damage. The Municipality is not waiting for the next construction season to complete additional paving and is making this investment now to ensure roads are safe, reduce the need for more costly repairs and preserve the value of existing infrastructure.
