Wood Buffalo RCMP are advising residents of a scam text message currently circulating that appears to come from “Alberta Registry Services” and references an alleged unpaid traffic or parking violation.
The message claims the recipient has an outstanding ticket and directs them to a link to submit payment. It also includes threats of additional charges and possible impacts to driver’s licence or vehicle registration renewal if the supposed fine is not addressed.
This type of messaging is designed to create urgency and pressure individuals into acting quickly, using fear-based tactics and fraudulent payment links to obtain personal or financial information.
Residents are strongly encouraged not to open or click any links contained in unsolicited text messages and to avoid sharing personal, banking, or identification details. Any concerns regarding fines or outstanding matters should be confirmed directly through official government or agency websites or contact channels.
Wood Buffalo RCMP recommend deleting suspicious messages immediately and reporting them where possible. They also remind the public that legitimate government agencies do not request sensitive personal or financial information through unsolicited text messages containing payment links.
Individuals who may have interacted with the link or provided information are urged to contact their financial institution without delay. They should also report the incident to their local police service.
