Wildfire danger has increased to very high in the Fort McMurray Forest Area as crews respond to a rising number of fires caused by lightning. However, officials report that no communities are currently at risk. As of late Wednesday, June 24, Alberta Wildfire reported eight active wildfires in the forest area. This includes three wildfires classified as out of control, four that are being contained, and one that is under control. Since the beginning of the year, a total of 34 wildfires have been documented in the Fort McMurray Forest Area. The heightened fire danger follows a period of hot, dry weather.
Alberta Wildfire has warned that fires can ignite and spread rapidly under these current conditions. Residents are urged to exercise caution outdoors and to avoid activities that could potentially spark a wildfire.
Parks Canada has deployed two helicopters for bucketing operations, while crews from Parks Canada and the Northwest Territories work on the ground. Additionally, air tankers from Alberta have been mobilized to assist with fire suppression efforts. Parks Canada assures that none of the current wildfires pose a threat to communities, infrastructure, or cabins.
