Three Indigenous artists have been chosen to create artwork for EPCOR’s new flood barriers at the Rossdale Water Treatment Plant. The pieces will celebrate the longstanding relationship between Indigenous Peoples and the North Saskatchewan River while enhancing a major flood mitigation project aimed at protecting Edmonton’s drinking and water supply.
Nicole Dmytruk, Transmission Operations and Training with EPCOR, tells CFWE the art installations were developed with guidance from Rossdale community members and Indigenous partners to reflect the cultural significance of water through Indigenous storytelling and artistic expression.
Tiffany Shaw, one of the three selected artists, says her piece will explore the connections between aquatic species and the ancient glacial forces that shaped the waterway now known today as the North Saskatchewan River.
The project is slated to be completed in 2027.
