Edmonton’s newest recreation facility has been officially named Mistahaya wîkihk Community Recreation Centre, a Cree name gifted by Enoch Cree Nation Elder Bob Cardinal. Meaning “Grizzly Bear’s Home,” the name recognizes the land’s history and reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation, as the major west-end hub located at 22103 Ave NW prepares to serve more than 75,000 residents ahead of its planned 2028 opening.
City of Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack tells CFWE it’s a high honor for the recreation centre to receive the sacred name, noting the space will serve as a vital place for community gathering.
Knack highlights the amenities included with the Mistahaya wîkihk Community Recreation Centre, that includes:
- Aquatic facility with a 50-metre pool
- Twin arena
- Multi-purpose and studio spaces
- Fitness centre
- Double gymnasium and a separate ½ gymnasium
- Running/walking track
- Indoor Playground
- Medium-sized Edmonton Public Library branch
