Albertans may hear an emergency alert tone on their phones, radios and televisions Wednesday afternoon, but Alert Ready says it will only be a test.
A test of Canada’s Alert Ready emergency alert system is scheduled for 1:55 p.m. Alberta time on Wednesday, May 6, as part of Emergency Preparedness Week.
The test will be broadcast on television, radio and compatible wireless devices connected to LTE or 5G networks.
Canadians in participating provinces and territories will receive one test message from their provincial or territorial emergency management organization.
The test message will simulate an emergency alert, begin with the Alert Attention Signal and clearly indicate that it is a test and that no action is required.
Alert Ready says the annual test is designed to ensure the system continues to function effectively and to help Canadians recognize alert signals during real emergencies that include tornadoes, floods, wildfires and AMBER Alerts.
