The Town of Peace River has issued a state of local emergency following an escalating flood warning.
The alert is for everyone from the Highway 2 bridge to 104 Avenue, and was issued because of an ice jam at the mouth of the Smoky River.
Town officials warn that water levels are rising, especially in low-lying areas like Lower West Peace, Downtown, the North End, Heart River, and Pat’s Creek.
The Heart River is starting to break up and Pats Creek is now flowing into the Peace River.
According to Alberta River Basins, the Smoky River ice jam has now reached the Peace River.
In the event of an evacuation, notifications will also be sent through Alberta Emergency Alerts.
