Load limit increases on Fort Chipewyan Winter Road

The load limit on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road has been increased to 15,000 kilograms. This will allow heavier vehicles to begin using the route.

Vehicles exceeding the limit must stay off the winter road until futher increases are announced, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo warn that heavier loads could damage the ice surface and create safety hazards or delays.

All commercial loads require a permit to use the winter road, this includes fuel trucks and semi-trailers. All changes to load limits will be formally announced and drivers are expected to follow posted signage and detours.

Drivers are being reminded to stay to the right, stop at river corssings where only one vehicle is permitted at a time, and watch for crews and equipment.
