Tiered, colour-coded weather alerts are now in effect across the country, as Environment & Climate Canada have updated the way it issues severe watches and warnings.
This change goes into effect on Wednesday, and will see watches and warnings in yellow, orange or red.
These new categories will be impact-based and risk-tiered.
Yellow is the base level alert, orange indicates more severe impacts, and red alerts will be used for the most dangerous impacts.
The colour-coded alerting system is already being used with the World Meteorological Organization and in other countries like the U.K. This gives meteorologists the chance to categorize severe weather based on confidence and the level of impact on the community.
A vast majority of alerta will get a yellow rating, however, severe weather events that have widespread or long impacts will get upgraded to orange or red.
