A rematch of the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals will take place at Rogers Place tonight when the Carolina Hurricanes take on the Edmonton Oilers.
It’s been a slow start for the Oilers, with new faces inserted into the lineup, trying to establish themselves, the group has yet to gel completely, especially on the powerplay.
Since March 2023 through the end of the 2023-24 regular season, the Oilers unit operated at a 27.9 percent clip — the top unit in the league. This year is alot different, with Edmonton only scoring one powerplay goal in their first 15 attempts.
Edmonton’s special teams unit couldn’t generate any goals on their two powerplay’s against Dallas. The Stars however, scored 3 seconds into their powerplay on route to a 4-1 victory over the Oil.
Glen Gulutzan was introduced as an Oilers Assistant Coach prior to the 2018-19 season after spending the previous two seasons as Head Coach of the NHL’s Calgary Flames. He’s since created one of the better powerplay units in the league. Head Coach Kris Knoblauch continues to express his faith and belief in the Oilers powerplay unit.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is currently taking faceoff’s for the Oilers top powerplay unit and spoke to media ahead of their matchup against the Hurricanes saying teams are adjusting to how they play with the man advantage, now they need to adjust.
Gametime between the ‘Canes and Oilers will be tonight at 7pm. Following this matchup, Edmonton will host Sidney Crosby and the Penguins Friday night at Rogers Place with puck drop set for 7pm.
