Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement officials are looking forward to the community getting a new school in the near future. Buffalo Lake, about 50 kilometers southwest of Lac La Biche, is the only Métis settlement in the province that doesn’t have its own school.
Right now, students in the area who are in kindergarten to Grade 8 are bussed both ways from the settlement area to the Caslan School, a Northern Lights Public School located in the Caslan community, outside the Buffalo Lake borders. Students in grades 9-12 are also bussed from the community to go to high schools in Plamondon or Lac La Biche.
Information from the Northern Lights Public Schools, a new school for Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement is part of the school division’s Capital Plan. The project is top of mind after a replacement school for Vera M. Welsh Elementary School in Lac La Biche has been built, along with a plan that meets the infrastructure needs of the Cold Lake-based schools Art Smith Aviation Academy, North Star Elementary School, and Cold Lake Junior High.
