Projects in smaller communities are slated on an early funding list under a multi-billion-dollar program to slow down overcrowding in provincial schools.
Alberta Education released a list that says the province is set to move forward on a program projected to create or improve 200,000 education centres in seven years.
Alberta Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said approvals for these schools will probably qualify for fast-tracking with the $8.6-billion School Construction Accelerator Program. The premier announced the plan on September 17, in an address on broadcast tv.
He pointed to Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge as likely candidates. Also mentioned was Maillaig, a hamlet 200 km northeast of Edmonton. On the docket is also Barrhead Composite High School, which is about 120 km northwest of Edmonton in Pembina Hills School Division.
