Slave Lake RCMP are changing the role of its plainclothes unit.
Last week it became official that the General Investigation Section (GIS) will focus on crime prevention, rather than what a news release calls “reactive investigations.” After seeing the advantages, the RCMP is deciding “to move several members into a new Crime Reduction Unit (CRU).”
GIS units typically do ‘after-the-fact’ investigations. The Crime Reduction Unit will be proactive in stopping crimes before they happen. According to the release, one way of doing this is “targeting high-risk priority offenders.”, as well as other preventative measures.
“In many communities a small group of individuals are frequently responsible for a large amount of crime,” says the release.
“While crime rates in Slave Lake remain relatively low, not changing significantly from the past few years, this new team will aim to reduce crime rates even more by targeting priority offenders who cause the most harm in the community.”
The Slave Lake CRU will also be engaging with the community, including local business, non-profits, and community groups.
