The Alberta Government will provide $149M for Jasper’s recovery from a wildfire that burned one third of it’s townsite. The funding comes from the province’s Disaster Recovery Program.
The program will cover 90% of eligible expenses, while the municipality’s remaining share can be submitted for federal funds. The program funded wildfire and flooding recovery efforts in 2023, flooding recovery in northern Alberta in 2020, and wildfire recovery in Fort McMurray and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in 2016.
The program does not cover costs, damage or loss that could have been covered by insurance.
The wildfire in July burned down 358 homes and businesses, putting it among one of the highest Canadian Natural Disasters in history.
In a statement released by Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland he stated his gratitude noting he can count on the provincial partners for continued support in this area.
