The Town of Sylvan Lake recently announced their massive National Indigenous Peoples Day event on June 21st.
Indigenous People’s Day commemorates the heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Metis. Traditionally, Indigenous gatherings included games, trading, dancing, food and storytelling. Sylvan Lake will have a full day of activities including medicine walk with Knowledge Keeper Claire Butterfly.
Butterfly has been in this role for close to five years, he spoke with CFWE discussing the growth of NIPD within Sylvan Lake.
The Community invites everyone to celebrate the unique heritage and culture of Indigenous Peoples and experience Bannock making, foraging tours, cultural crafts, storytelling, traditional dances and games in partnership with Powwow Times.
Tom Bradshaw is the Culture Coordinator with the Town of Sylvan Lake, he’s been in this role for three years and joined CFWE to discuss the cultural aspects within the celebrations.
With live performances from Kayley Jade, Brettyn Rose, Rellik, Trent Agecoutay and Brianna Lizotte, Centennial Park will be the hub for all things live music on June 21st.
Megan Hanson is the Mayor of Sylvan Lake, previously served two terms on council and says many residents in the community and surrounding area have grown to love these events.
The 2024 NIPD celebrations will start at 2:30pm with the medicine walk and will conclude at midnight with live music. CFWE will be live on location throughout the day. Details can be found on their webpage.
