The man responsible for killing two men in Edmonton’s inner-city has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The sentence was handed down from Court of King’s Bench Justice John Henderson to 24-year old Montana Roy Houle, who plead guilty to manslaughter in the deaths of both Deng Malith Deng and Travis Waskahat.
The separate incidents happened within a few blocks of central Edmonton in 2020 and 2021. Houle was initially facing charges of second-degree murder in both homicides.
Houle fired a .22 calibre weapon at Deng on Aug. 26, 2020, after Deng, 32, answered the door of an apartment suite he was visiting.
As Houle and another man fled down the alley, he dropped his cellphone, which police found logged into his Facebook account. A witness also identified Houle from a photo lineup. A full year had almost past when Houle was arrested.
In that time, Houle visited another home in the area on June 8, 2021 and confronted Travis Waskahat over alleged text messages sent to Houle’s then girlfriend.
Edmonton Police identified Houle as a suspect in both murders and issued a public notice, requesting assistance on his whereabouts.
A total of 20 years was sough by Crown prosecutor Breena Smith sought initially, including 12 years for killing Deng and eight years for killing Waskahat.
Defence lawyer Patrick Edgerton asked that his client serve a total of 12 years.
Justice Henderson eventually settled in the middle.
Houle was denied bail and credited roughly three years of pre-trial credit, leaving him approximately 12 years to serve.
