48 First Nations in the province will be receiving more support from the Federal Government when it comes to the upcoming 2024 wildfire season.
2023 was a record-breaking wildfire season in the province of Alberta with some First Nation communities being devastated.
Little Red River Cree Nation and Fox Lake were just one of the areas heavily impacted by wildfires last summer causing its 3,700 residents to be forced to evacuate.
The aftermath of the fires resulted in over 100 homes and 200 structures being destroyed in First Nation communities.
Along additional supports ahead of the 2024 wildfire season. The Federal Government has announced all 48 First Nations in Alberta will be assigned an Emergency Management Coordinator.
Federal Indigenous Relations Minister Patty Hadjuexplains, details the the role of the coordinator.
While Leaders of First Nations are grateful for any support from the Federal Government, they are also requesting support in areas of infrastructure such as fire trucks and water hook up locations for hoses.
Communities are also hoping for some level of support to replace destroyed structures and repair the devastated communities.
There are currently 49 active wildfires province, all of which are under control.
