After investing $20 million dollars over four years, the City of Edmonton completed a new Indigenous-owned affordable housing unit.
The new construction of “Metis Capital Housing” at 9505-105 Ave is in response to the City’s 2022 Housing Needs Assessment found that 1 in 3 Indigenous renter households are in “core housing need,” meaning they pay more than they can afford or are forced to live in crowded or unsafe conditions. Of the approximately 2,800 people experiencing homelessness in Edmonton, nearly 60 per cent are Indigenous.
The Mayor of Edmonton, Armajeet Sohi spoke to the Windspeaker Radio Network about the importance on making sure all Indigenous people within the city and area can afford housing.
Sohi mentioned the cost of living continuing to rise across Canada and in Alberta, the funding provided to these new units will hopefully tackle the housing crisis and keep Edmonton affordable for all.
