The Alberta Government pre-budget announcement was made today and a few of the takeaways are that the province plans to put a pause on the once proposed South Edmonton Hospital build, while it plans to create a standalone Stollery Children;s Hospital facility according to Health Minister Adriana Lagrange.
Lagrange spoke at a news conference and detailed how the proposed plans will move children out of the current U of A Hospital location where the Stollery currently sits, which will free up 200 spaces for adult patients.
“On the South Edmonton Hospital, we are pausing to have a more comprehensive look at how we can better serve the needs of Edmontonians and all of the north of Alberta that utilizes facilities within Edmonton,” LaGrange said.
No timeline was provided as of yet on how long the pause on the South Edmonton Hospital will last, which is proposed to be built on a 32–acre site in South West Edmonton’s Rutherford area near 127 Street S.W and Ellerslie Road.
In 2017, the then leading NDP announced the build of the new hospital to address the cities rapid growth in the area and had planned for a 2020 start to construction.
In 2019, when the UCP formed government, these plans were delayed by three years from 2027 to 2030.
