City of Edmonton
An overpass that is already under construction and designed to reduce stress on drivers will now see the support of federal transportation funds and free up over $30 million dollars of City of Edmonton funds.
The 50 st crossing has been synonymous with long wait times, no matter the time of day and has been a thorn in the side of commuters in East Edmonton for years, causing delays ranging anywhere from 5 minutes to to 45 minutes.
Even our Mayor Amarjeet Sohi spoke about being stuck in traffic.
On Tuesday, the federal government announced that it would be contributing $31 million to the City of Edmonton to fund the 50 Street CP Rail grade separation and widening project which will now free up the previous investment from the City of Edmonton.
Mayor Sohi spoke to the media about being pleased about the freeing up of funds and the support from the federal government.
The City increased the cost of the project back in April of 2022 by $32.3 million, citing the cost increase was due to factors including disruptions in the construction industry as well as significant cost increase of several commodities specific to the project.
The city has been working vigorously to save hundreds of millions of dollars in various projects and areas for funds to be redirected toward core services such as snow removal.
The total project cost of the 50 Street project has a price tag of around $180 million. The funding announced Tuesday is on top of $39 million already contributed by the federal government.
The city said the project is on budget and scheduled for completion by fall, 2027.
