The Oskayak (Cree word for Youth) Police Academy was created to help educate Indigenous youth about policing practices, cultural and police protocols, and crime prevention initiatives.
This two-week program from July 4 – 14, is geared toward self-identified Indigenous youth between grades 10 to 12. OPA helps to build stronger, more resilient youth, and more knowledgeable police officers. It helps educate Indigenous youth about the EPS, and EPS officers about Indigenous youth, as they participate in shared experiences and learn about practices, protocols, culture, and crime prevention initiatives.
OPA participants will develop relationships with Police and community members, learn about EPS and how police officers work within their community, interact with community members & organizations to develop leadership skills that contribute to sustainable relationships with Edmonton Police, and experience traditional Indigenous cultural teachings
