The Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police (AACP) announced that survivors of Residential School and Sixties Scoop will have their fees waved by all police agencies in Alberta who wish to reclaim their Indigenous names.
The decision supports the Truth and Reconciliation call to action for those who wish to get their Indigenous names on government issued I.D’s.
Windspeaker Radio Network spoke with Clint Healy of the TsuuT’ina Police Service and the chair of the AACP Policing with Indigenous Peoples committee about how the call to action will help those seeking to reclaim their Indigenous name.
Healy says that with the implementation of waiving fees, it will help survivors remove that financial barrier to reclaim their Indigenous name.
Healy goes on to say that all agencies are ready to accommodate requests across the province for name changes to be processed.
