A new pedestrian bridge has opened in southwest Edmonton on Tuesday, replacing a 100 year old structure.
The new bridge is located along 23 Avenue and provides access to the MacTaggart and Larch Sanctuaries. It’s in the same location as the one built back in 1914 and is named after the Smith family, recognized for their work in the area.
From 1914 to 1961 it was a vehicle bridge before being converted to pedestrians. Construction began in 2022, finished ahead of schedule and within in the $6.3M budget.
