The Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation will be hosting a language conference at the Doubletree by Hilton in west Edmonton from November 8th to 10th with the goal of revitalizing language and culture.
The conference will help build capacity for First Nation communities that need language revitalization strategies. This conference will engage elders, leaders, cultural/traditional knowledge keepers, and Nakota (Stoney) Language Teachers and Teacher Aids to share knowledge and best practices is one way of strengthening faculty and expanding language programs and services.
Stephanie Alexis is one of the organizers of the event and says many neighboring communities will be invited to take part in the 3 day language conference.
The weekend will include round dances, elders panel, personal training workshops and keynote speakers headlined by Chief Arvol Lookinghorse, the keeper of the sacred white buffalo calf pipe.
Alexis touched on the importance of keeping the language alive.
Registration for the event is still open, if you’d like more details on the 2023 Nakota Language Conference, visit their website.
