The Edmonton Expo Centre has closed its registration due to high volumes of evacuees displaced by the Northwest Territory fires.
Edmonton has seen twice the number of people compared to Alberta visitors using the city’s emergency services earlier in the wildfire season.
The Expo doesn’t have enough space for the volume of people coming from the north, and according to the city, have now shut down registration for evacuees.
The city says there are no more hotels available, which led to the deciding of closing the registration for new evacuees.
Edmonton currently has 300 cots set up in the Expo, with nearly 7,000 evacuees registered.
Those who are not able to register at the Expo Centre are still able to register at a reception centre outside the city, and stop by the Expo for food, clothing and a temporary place to rest.
The city continues to provide support for those who are already registered.
