Edmonton Catholic Schools
At approximately 8:15 a.m. this morning, Friday, June 2, 2023, police responded to a bomb threat received by phone, at Cardinal Leger Catholic Junior High School.
Multiple resources from EPS Northwest Branch and the EPS Bomb Detail, responded to the school, as students evacuated the school.
St. Philip Catholic Elementary School, which is located nearby, was also alerted out of caution, due to its proximity to Cardinal Leger.
While the incident remains under investigation at this time, the call appears to be a “swatting incident”.
If arrested, any individual(s) found to be responsible for a swatting incident could face criminal charges of uttering threats and/or public mischief.
This comes a day after six schools were affected on Thursday, June 1, when four schools recieved bomb and firearm threats which came in the form of phone calls on Thursday afternoon.
Threats were made to St. Edmund Catholic Elementary/Junior High School and Calder School at approxamitely 118 Street and 130 Avenue in northwest Edmonton’s Calder area.
Similar threats were also called into St. Philip Catholic Elementary School and Cardinal Leger Catholic Junior High School near 144 Avenue and 87 Street in northeast Edmonton’s Evansdale neighbourhood.
Dickensfield School and Northmount School, located kitty-corner from St. Philip and Cardinal Leger, were put on alert due to their proximity to the schools that received actual threats.
St. Philip was briefly placed on lockdown, but that school was primarily on-alert Wednesday afternoon according to Edmonton Catholic Schools.
Edmonton Public Schools confirmed three of its schools also went into lockdown or on alert.
Royal Alexandra Hospital also received similar threats by phone according to Edmonton Police.
