Strathcona County RCMP said heavy smoke and fog resulted in multiple collisions on Highway 21 and Highway 14 Friday morning.
First responders were called to at least two multi-vehicle collisions on Highway 21 near Township Road 520.
Fourteen people were taken to hospital. A woman in her 30s was flown to the University of Alberta Hospital by STARS in critical condition, and another woman was tranposted by EMS to hospital in critical condition. Seven men and five women were taken by ground ambulance to hospital in stable condition, Alberta Health Services said.
In a news release, RCMP said “visibility in the area is extremely poor due to heavy smoke from the wildfires combined with moisture in the air.”
There have been crashes and other disruptions on Highway 21. RCMP have diverted traffic on Highway 21 at Wye Road and Highway 41 due to collisions on Highway 21.
RCMP are asking drivers to avoid the area. Travel is not recommended.
