Bishop Lloyd Middle School in Lloydminster has opened a mental health classroom, made possible through a partnership between the Lloydminster Public School Division (LPSD), CASA Mental Health, and the Government of Alberta.
The new CASA Mental Health Classroom program aims to support local middle school students whose mental health challenges significantly impact their home, social, and school lives.
A team from CASA Mental Health collaborates with a teacher from the Lloydminster Public School Division to offer therapy, medical and psychiatric care, medication support, and educational programming tailored to each student’s needs.
CASA, which stands for Child and Adolescent Services for All, has been providing mental health support to children and youth in Alberta since 1989. In 2023, the organization simplified its name to CASA Mental Health while continuing to use the CASA acronym. This school-based program combines mental health care and education in a single setting.
“We’re hearing from families across Alberta that CASA Classrooms gave them hope. Children and youth are leaving our classrooms with confidence, independence and the skills they need to manage their mental illness for life. With better emotional regulation and the ability to focus back on their academics, patients are getting back on track in their schooling as well. CASA Classrooms are proving that with the right mental health support and care, kids and families can achieve what they once may have thought impossible,” said Lori Roe, director of clinical services for CASA Mental Health Classrooms.
Each CASA Classroom can accommodate up to 24 students annually. Referrals are made based on each student’s unique mental health and educational needs, in collaboration with their school.
