Samantha Collins has taken up the role within the First Nation’s Education Department, where she will work with Fort McKay students in Grades 8 through 12 who attend school in Fort McMurray.
Her responsibilities include providing individualized support, tracking academic progress and attendance, and collaborating closely with school principals, teachers, counsellors, and Indigenous liaison staff.
Collins will also guide students through their academic options while attending to their broader well-being.
A Fort McMurray resident of 17 years, Collins is a graduate of Father Patrick Mercredi High School and recently earned a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Calgary.
In the weeks ahead, she plans to reach out to families one by one to introduce herself and better understand how she can assist both students and their households.
According to Fort McKay First Nation, the position centres on fostering strong relationships and supporting young people in achieving success both in their studies and in their personal lives.
