Ottawa is investing $6.6 million to advance Indigenous-led energy projects and aviation skills training in Cold Lake.
The bulk of the funding—$6 million—has been directed to Etthen Energy Corporation, a company owned by Cold Lake First Nations.
The money will support expansion of heavy oil development on the nation’s territory, including the construction of new well sites and related facilities.
A further $600,000 investment in the City of Cold Lake will support renovations and upgrades to an aircraft hangar at the Cold Lake Regional Airport, establishing a training facility for an Aircraft Maintenance Engineering – Structures program.
The new training space and equipment will help prepare workers for careers in aviation maintenance and respond to growing demand for skilled workers in the region’s aerospace and defence sectors.
According to the federal government, the combined investment is projected to create 90 jobs, provide training for 30 individuals, and assist three small- and medium-sized businesses.
