The Royal Alberta Museum (RAM), announced a collection of more than 17,000 artifacts collected north of Fort McMurray back to Fort McKay First Nation.
The collection includes arrowheads, tools, bones and several other cultural items that are 11,000 years old. A ceremony was held inside the Elsie Fabian School run by Fort McKay First Nation as 77 of the artifacts where unveiled.
Fort McKay Chief Raymond Powder calls the collection a timeline of how his ancestors lived off the land for thousands of years, and the relationship made with the land.
The artifacts come from the area near Moose Lake located northwest of Fort McKay First Nation.
RAM’s leadership group reached out to Fort McKay First Nation to arrange the item’s return, as Meaghan Patterson, the RAM’s executive director says; “Working with First Nations communities to ensure proper cultural care and stewardship of their belongings is a priority for us at the Royal Alberta Museum.”
