Paving began on Sunday on a stretch of Highway 63 through Fort McMurray, after months of public complaints, political pressure and citizen-led pothole repair efforts.
Paving work by Alberta Transportation started on August 3rd between Beacon Hill Drive and north of the Confederation Way interchange in both directions.
Construction will take place daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and is expected to take about two weeks. Motorists can expect alternating lane closures and single-lane traffic at times while work is underway.
This project follows a summer of growing frustration over the conditions of Highway 63 through Fort McMurray.
The province has also agreed to explore transferring responsibility for spring and summer maintainence on the urban sections of Highway 63 to the municipality, but discussions are still ongoing.
