The City of Grande Prairie is ramping up preparations as the Grande Prairie Police Service prepares to become the community’s official police service on October 21, 2026—two years ahead of the original schedule.
The transition remains on track, with GPPS officers currently working alongside RCMP members during the handover period. The service is expanding its staffing, training programs, and specialized units to ensure a seamless changeover. The service is also strengthening community policing through dedicated teams focused on engagement, youth programs, and foot patrols.
“In just three months, the Grande Prairie Police Service will become the police of jurisdiction for our city,” said Dwayne Lakusta, Chief of Police for GPPS. “We have built a strong team of trained and experienced officers and are focused on ensuring all systems and service units are fully operational before the transition.”
Once fully operational, GPPS will provide a full range of dedicated resources tailored to Grande Prairie, including:
- A tactical team
- Criminal Investigative Section
- Specialized Investigations Section
- Forensic services
- Polygraph examiner
- Canine teams
- Drone operations
Officials say residents will see no interruption in policing services when the transition takes place. The public will continue to use the same emergency and non-emergency contact numbers, 9-1-1 and 780-830-5700 to access police services.
