Motorists travelling Highways 28 and 63 should prepare for significant delays over the coming days as an oversized industrial shipment heads north toward Fort McMurray.
The massive convoy is expected to arrive on Highway 28 on Tuesday, July 14, heading west and stopping for the night at the Radway Scale around 8 p.m.
It will resume its journey early Wednesday, continuing west along Highway 28 before turning north onto Highway 63.
Moving at a top speed of just 50 km/h and occupying the full width of the roadway—including shoulders—the convoy will periodically travel in the oncoming lane, forcing temporary road closures.
Drivers can expect disruptions throughout Wednesday on both highways as the load makes its way north, with a planned stop at the May Tower South Rest Area around 5:30 p.m.
On Thursday, July 16, the convoy will depart again at daylight and continue north on Highway 63, reaching a staging area roughly 35 kilometres south of Fort McMurray by about 3 p.m. It will remain there until shortly after midnight Friday.
The journey through Fort McMurray is scheduled for 12:15 a.m. on Friday, July 17.
Due to the extreme height of the load, the convoy will detour via highway ramps to bypass overpasses.
The load being transported is a de-methanizer pressure vessel used in natural gas processing.
The unit weighs 523,300 kilograms and measures 104 metres long, 6.5 metres wide and nearly eight metres high.
The vessel is being carried on trailers containing 352 wheels and will be accompanied by guide vehicles throughout the journey.
