Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Ontario Premier Doug Ford have jointly announced plans for a new pipeline designed to transport crude oil from western Canada to eastern refineries.
The initiative, known as the Northern Shield Energy Corridor, envisions a roughly 3,300-kilometre route stretching from Hardisty, Alberta, to Sarnia, Ontario.
Once completed, the line would feed directly into Ontario’s key refining region, helping move Canadian oil to domestic markets more efficiently.
Officials are promoting the project as a significant step toward bolstering national energy independence, cutting dependence on imported supplies, generating employment opportunities across provinces, and expanding access to both Canadian and international buyers.
The pipeline would initially carry approximately 500,000 barrels per day, with room to scale up to 800,000 barrels daily if demand grows. Construction would also stay within Canadian borders and utilize domestically produced steel.-
Monday’s announcement comes days after Smith proposed another new pipeline route from Alberta to the British Columbia coast.
That pipeline is at the heart of an energy deal Smith signed with Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Ottawa is expected to decide by October whether it will be fast- tracked through the federal review process.
