25 public speakers were in attendance in City Hall yesterday to discuss the scaling back of the Capital Line LRT South extension which was initially projected at $1.085-billion and utmost people opposes to the idea.
Edmonton will not be able to build the LRT extension that will see stops on Ellerslie Road and stations in Twin Brooks and HEritage Valley according to its initial proposed budget. This was attributed to heightened costs related to the pandemic, according to the city.
Suggestions brought forward included scrapping some of the above ground plans for ground level crossings at Ellerslie Road as well as the Heritage Valley Station. Amendments to the proposed park and ride spaces at Heritage Valley also mentioned along with fewer light rail vehicles to save money.
Elevating the stations and crossings , similar to what we have seen in Wagner at the Valley Line extension, could cost upwards of an extra $85 million to $100 million according to city staff.
Opponents added that putting these crossings at ground level would likely increase traffic wait times significantly.
Some at the meeting proposed not building the Twin Brooks Station all together.
City Councils executive committee has moved the item to the next council meeting May 16 for a vote.
