A northern Alberta town says it is no longer at risk of seeing immediate flooding after it issued an alert yesterday warning residents they may have to leave.
On Friday afternoon, the Town of Peace River had cancelled its flood alert, saying water flows in the Heart River have decreased.
In a Facebook post, the town says there is still a risk of ice jams forming within the boundaries of the community, and that residents should continue to prepare for changing conditions.
People who live between the Highway 2 bridge and 104 Avenue in the south end were initially warned they may have to leave because of possible flooding along the Heart River.
A state of emergency was also called Thursday to give the town additional authority to act quickly, and take necessary measures to protect residents, property and critical infrastructure.
