Northern Alberta takes centre stage this weekend as Grande Prairie hosts the 2026 Canadian Wrestling Championships from April 24 to 26 at the Design Works Centre. Nearly 900 athletes, coaches and officials are expected to attend, with the event projected to generate over $1.2 million in economic impact while showcasing the region as a premier destination for competitions.
Nolan Dyck, MLA for the City of Grande Prairie spoke with CFWE on attending the opening ceremonies, adding that the event gives Alberta athletes the chance to compete on a grand stage with visiting athletes from across the country.
Dyck adds that Alberta’s government provided $58,800 in funding through the Major Sport Events grant program to support the championships. The grant program provides financial assistance to help Albertan communities host national and international competitions, strengthening Alberta’s reputation as a premier destination for sport tourism, which will remain open until June 1. The championships are expected to generate more than $1.2 million in economic impact for the region as participants shop, dine, stay and play locally.
