First Nations leaders in Alberta are pushing back against a proposed separation petition, calling it unconstitutional and a violation of Treaty Rights. Chiefs are urging Albertans to stand with them and are launching legal action to stop the petition from moving forward.
Treaty 8 First Nations Grand Chief Trevor Mercredi tells CFWE if separatist’s break confederation, the treaties would no longer apply – adding that the land was meant to be shared – not surrendered and non-indigenous treaty people would have no claim to it.
