The load limit on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road will be increasing to 45,000 kilograms come Thursday at noon.
Officials say this new load limit is the maximum allowed for the season, and no increases will be made. Vehicles that exceed posted weight limits face significant fines and penalties.
Drivers should plan ahead, drive to conditions and follow all posted signage while using the winter road. Motorists are asked to remain alert for crews and equipment, as they could be working on the roadway.
Heavy vehicles like fuel trucks and semi-trailers require a permit to travel on the road. Drivers are reminded to stay to the right, and to stop at river crossings, where only one vehicle can cross at a time.
Road users are asked to monitor conditions through municipal updates, the winter road hotline, or the municipality’s website and social media channels.
